How to use a Thin Rip Table Saw Jig. Is it something that you need?
Great video! Thank you :)
I'm currently working with polycrylic on a small live edge sign for my dad's shop. So far I've had some good luck applying the poly with a foam brush heavily and then wiping smooth with a cloth. It's a thin coat and you must be careful not to wipe it all off completely, BUT the finish is very very smooth so far
That is a very good idea Epicwin. Thanks for watching.
This is a fantastic video! I’m building a new wooden cabinet for an old guitar amp and I was torn between danish oil or stain/poly. This helped me make up my mind!
I am Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching.
I've been using the Hercules stand for my Dewalt 12" miter saw for a couple of years now. I've been very happy with it.
So far Tonyg, I am happy with it to.
I have a sideboard that was refinished using WATCO Danish Oil. I would like to paint the base of the sideboard with chalk paint and leave the cabinets and drawers fronts natural walnut. How do I prepare the sideboard before using the chalk paint?
I have never done that, but I would think all you need to do is sand it and paint with the chalk paint. like you would anything else.
I inherited the jig from my dad and like it, but it has one flaw IMHO... it only handles standard slides (~1.5" high) and not any of the heavy duty versions (2-3"). I'd love to see a version that can be adjusted for bigger slides.
I would agree with that csimet. Thanks for watching.
Good video
Thanks for the visit
Thank you! I kept layering the dish oil on my table and the machine is not even… So I appreciate your explanation. My question is… I’m using this on my dining room table, I will go back and sand before adding another layer, will danish oil create enough of a protective seal for a dining room table
After two layers of Danish Oil, I would use some wipe on Poly. Just give the oil at least 72 hours to dry before applying the Poly. That would give you a more durable top. I have only used Danish oil on the coffee table you see as my icon photo for the channel. and that is redone about every 10 years and I made that in 1973. So Danish oil can be durable and it will last. The nice thing is that it is easy to refinish when needed.
These do make a nice gift. However, they are an expensive kit, if anyone is making them for resale. At $30 per kit plus tax (if applicable ) and shipping, it is a bit not affordable for most people.
I agree User, only good for gifts.
Do you sell your pen blanks? If so, how do you sell them? Online or at pen shows?
Sorry to say Tom, I do not sell them. I just make them for my own use and to give as presents.
Thank you for this video, I needed to see these hinges installed.
Very welcome!
Can Danish oil be thined? I have a part I make it'd like to dip in the oil to help it resist water.
Yes it can, and it will make it easier to apply. This works really well with older danish oil that thickens up over time. But don't thin it too much.
Can dip metals and plastics in it for a clear coat protection coating?
I am not sure on that one Sweetaccord.
@@MadNerdWorkshop OK 😊
How about using an hvlp sprayer with a fine spray nozzle? Have you tried that? Would that leave a smooth finish with a water based poly?
I did in another video, and I agree, it does work well. Thanks for watching.
Why would anyone ever joint a board with gloves on? You’re just asking for a very bad accident. Any spinning blade or lathe etc is going to grab cloth and pull it in and the result will be devastating. I’ll take a small splinter any day versus losing fingers or permanently damaging a limb.
If your finger or hand was that close to the blade to catch the glove, your hands were way too close in the first place. Wearing gloves comes from my days in the cabinet shop where you cut wood all day long, after about a week, you start wearing gloves. But that is a good safety tip Geenshvrt, if you are worried about that, I would definitely keep the gloves off. Thanks for watching.
No problem i use 1/3 Naptha 1/3 poly 1/3 linseed oil dries good and gets hard, don't buy the stuff in a can it is mostly thinner
Once I run out I will be trying that, Thanks!
I use slower drying mineral spirits in my danish mix. It seems once the wood is sealed, the linseed oil doesn't want to dry and gets sticky on the surface. That's usually the point where I wipe it down good with mineral spirits and start wiping on thinned poly. Is this the right approach?
very good video. The wood is Leopard wood.
I agree, though it could also be quarter sawn Mahogany. They look very similar
Cool, thank you. It is a nice looking wood.
I opened the cap with the exact same channelocks!
Or as we call them, the Danish Oil can openers. :)
Looks great! Think I'll build something similar for my own studio.
Have fun with it.
Thanks very much for sharing your results! Quick question for you as I'm switching to water based stains due to the intense fumes. Do I need to stick with a water based poly if I use a water based stain? It seems like you tested water based and oil based poly on the same shelves, and I'm assuming you didn't use different stains. Basically I'm saying I'll stick to the oil based wipe on poly if I can put that on top of a water based stain.
Once they are dry you should be able to use either one on top of each other. As always try it on a test piece just to make sure. Thanks for watching.
Hello sir, Great info. I am wondering what your thoughts are on applying lacquer on top of danish oil. It is for a pies which will be living outside. Can it be done without ruining the danish oil, and make it more durable against the weather. Thanks for your videos.
Not so sure about Lacquer, but you can apply Varnish after a 72 hour drying time.
I am putting Danish oil on plywood panels which a sculpture will be installed on. The panels will hang vertically to support wire sculpture. If I wanted to put a varnish over the oil to make the surface stronger or longer lasting, what would you recommend? Thank you for a great video
Any varnish will do, just let it dry for at least 72 hours before applying the Varnish. Good luck with the project.
@@MadNerdWorkshop Thank you! It's great you are still responding to questions.
I've never understood Danish oil. Apply and wipe it all off. Apply and wipe it all off again.... never letting it dry. It just doesn't make sense. I prefer rub-on satin Poly so I can build up layers to my liking, revealing or filling as much grain as I want to show.
It is a different kind of finish, but I like Wipe on Poly too. :)
I learn something new every time I watch your channel!
Awesome! Thank you for watching!
1:25 into the show you answered my question! Thank you Mr Reid!
Great and thanks for watching.
Great and thanks for watching
I have a project that i'm trying to decide about oil or water poly's but I saw that you have some pin-stripping on your cabinets and I haven't seen a good way to do the pin. Did you just free-hand it or did you put down painters tape first. Mine are a little less wider than yours, but would like some advice on what worked for you.
I am not sure what you mean about the pinstripes. The cabinet that I made have some Purple Heart wood glued in there to make the small line of color on the maple.
Thank you for this🎉
Thanks for watching.
Wipe Polly it’s good on small projects and small arts but in bigger things like cabinets handrails or any woodwork big it’s better to go regular Polly the protection it’s better and not do many coats like regular do on wiping 🧻 Polly
I agree with you thexflexcian. But after saying that, I did do all of my kitchen cabinets with Wipe-on Poly. I like the finish look of wipe-on.
to confirm, do you continue to lightly apply it over a 15 minute span?
I keep the area wet for the entire time and that will require lightly applying the oil over the 10-15 minutes. Hope that helps explains.
What is your procedure for drilling for the brass tube? Any different than other blanks?
The drilling is the same as all the other Pen I do. The steps are the same for these pens as any other blanks you will use.
Thanks for the video, I like your demeanor. I'll probably pick up some natural Danish oil and then try mixing in my own stains/dyes if I feel like it. It's annoying wiping any solvent based finish over a stain since the solvents pull up the stain. Having it mixed into the finish will lock it in as each coat cures.
It does make it a liltle easier for sure.
hi
Hi
Thank you for this very informative video!
You are so welcome and thanks for watching.
I am a complete newbie and am finishing a dining room table that I paint washed. I need to use the water based because I can’t move this table from where it is and my husband works from home and he can’t with the fumes. Should I go with Minwax wipe on or the One coat? And what would you suggest I use to apply it? A good synthetic brush or the foam brush or pad since it’s a flat but large surface?
Sorry for the late replay Camidodi, I go with the one coat that way you will have only one or two Coats to do, and it will hold up better. There are still some fumes they are just mot as bad. With wipe on I almost always do at least 3 coats.
I will starting a small garage shop, and would really appreciate if you can give some pointers on organization and the basic tools to buy, give us a tour of your shop. Keep up the great work!
Stay tune, I will be doing a makeover of my shop this year.
I used polycrylic on MDF before painting, which has the same look as the sanding sealer you're using. I wonder if what I'm doing is good enough.
I would think so, if it works for you than I would keep using that. The main thing is to seal the MDF and the polycrylic would do that same thing.
Which is the thinner brand? I'd like to try that too. I currently have a thing of watco I'm working through
You can use any paint thinner or mineral sprits.
Master Nerd; I have heard about using a Paper Bag between coats of Wipe-On (instead of the 3M Pads), What is your Wisdom on this matter. Thank You.
I have used paper bags on my wood turnings because it has a high spin rate and a lot of work passes over the paper. The paper has a very small amount of abrasion and it will work for smoothing out the finish if the finish is smooth. But if you have some dust or small imperfections then I like using the pads because for me they work a little faster to level out the coats.
They are excellent i have an large rack of expensive clamps an i use these the most by far
They do work well.
Dont recommend this channel!! Click
Sorry Keith.
Concluding statements shouldn't be made AFTER the video ends.
good point, the full length video in the link gives the full review.
I’ve used cheapy clamps to make some beautiful stuff
all you need them to do is hold the board together and these do the well.
HF is absolute chinese garbage!
fair enough :)
so did it clamp well ?? ?? ??
They do clamp very well, but they do leave a mark on the wood from the pads. so I only use them on the first glue up before sanding.
I do. Glad I bought it. Took about hour and a half to set up. My son in law installed the 220. Smooth running.
I am very happy with mine.
Thanks for this. Question, hoping maybe you can help - i’m using Minwax wipe on poly oil-based varnish applied with a foam brush to finish a painting, and the Minwax wipe on was recommended. I’ve been shaking it because that’s what the can recommends, and I keep getting bubbles. Frustrating! The Minwax site says never shake polyurethane varnish, but their own instructions for this product says to shake it repeatedly while using it, which tells me it must settle out. I thought perhaps I could shake it up, then dump the whole can into another container that has a wide enough mouth to be able to stir it, let it settle overnight, and then maybe stir it prior to use? Hoping this might reduce the bubbles. I heard you say not to shake it so it would seem to me this approach might work if the product does need to be mixed. Any suggestions? Thank you!
I would say with just stirring it only, unless it is old and needs a good mix. Then I think your idea of letting it sit overnight will work just fine.
Don't shake Poly and don't overthink it. Get rid of those foam brushes. Either use a high quality natural bristle brush. You will have to spend some money on a good brush but it is worth it or...forget the brush altogether and do what is being done in the video and wipe the poly on for a smooth, no brush mark finish. Trust me. The results will make you very happy! Cheers.
I’ve heard the wipe on poly is nothing more than thinned down regular poly. So make your own and save money!
you can do that and it will save you a fair amount of money. In addition, you can make it the thickness you like to work with.
I’m going with your idea and using the single bit. Nobody has ever mentioned doing this! It makes perfect sense! Simpler is definitely better! Thanks you thank you thank you
I am glad it was helpful and thank you for watching.
Just bought the 220v 14bx, still have to put together. My Jet is 6 inch and not strong enough on hard woods.
I think you are going to like it Testingtesting.
Danish Oil seems ok for book shelves, but I don't think it's suitable for a high-traffic kitchen worktop. I followed the great advice here. Worked perfectly as described. It's been down for a week, nothing sticks to it, but I dragged a tray across it and it scratched. Anyone else had problems with Danish Oil on a kitchen surface?
Danish Oil on Kitchen worktops will require some maintenance because it is not the hardest finish out there. Fortunately it is an easy fix with a little sanding and oil.
No one said it was
Well, thanks, no one. @@Solid_Jackson
